Boys from Brazil chuffed with Croatian crown
Special – that was the one word Poreč Major gold medalist Bruno Oscar Schmidt used after he and partner Alison Cerutti won their third Swatch Major Series title.
The 29-year-old world champion was in inspired form as he and Alison registered a stunning victory on a packed Center Court – with even more fans watching on big screens outside the venue.
And Bruno was quick to pay tribute to the organizers after another incredible week of top-class beach volleyball whizzed by.
“It’s a special time for our sport and it’s amazing to be a part of it,” he told us on the sand at Center Court. “Me and Alison wanted to win this so hard. Just look around. The tournament is amazing – the people behind it are helping raise the sport – it’s on another level. It’s great to have these moments – and it makes it even sweeter when you win.
“Every athlete wants to get to the final of Swatch Major Series events and when you win it makes it that more special.”
The winners were pushed all the way by Austrians Clemens Doppler and Alex Horst but their class told in the final set and the boys from Brazil could celebrate their second gold of the season.
“I’m so glad the game went to a third set because they deserved it and the crowd deserved it,” added Bruno. “They came back at us in the second set, serving really strong, they were on fire. But we finished really well and that was the best thing about the win.
“It was great to win but it was the manner in which we won that made it special.”
Congratulations once again guys!
