Gold medalists have to get ready for Gstaad
There’s no rest for Pedro and Guto following their Poreč Major triumph – on Monday they have to play in the country quota to make the Gstaad Major qualification phase!
The Brazilians won nine matches on the spin to come all the way from country quota to gold in Croatia – a feat no men’s team has ever done in Swatch Major Series history.
Americans Lucena/Dalhausser and Dopper/Horst of Austria were two big names to be beaten in the elimination stage before the Brazilianss pulled off a magnificent comeback victory over Olympic silver medalists Lupo/Nicolai in the final on Sunday.
“I’m happy but I’m tired – and we have to play tomorrow!” said Guto afterwards. “I have to thank Pedro for his performance this week – he has really helped.
“I don’t know how to describe him. I’d like to thank him for what we’ve achieved. We have won most matches this week because of him.”
However, Pedro Solberg, who won gold at Gstaad Major last year with Evandro is not getting carried away.
He said: “I hope this result can take us higher. There’s a lot of tournaments and it’s nice to win but we have to keep our feet on the floor because there are so many good teams.
“I think we’ve deserved the win this week because we’ve respected the opposition – I think that was key to our success this week.”
But the experienced blocker believes the gold medal could be the shape of things to come alongside his 23-year-old partner.
“I’m happy because I think that shows we’re going in the right direction,” said Pedro.
“When you don’t get good results you sometimes begin to question yourself. Are you good enough? Are you doing the right thing? So winning confirms that we’re doing things right.”
While it was their first medal in the Swatch Major Series, Italians Lupo/Nicolai were frustrated to finish as runners-up.
“We played a perfect first set, a good second set but I don’t know what happened in the third,” Nicolai said. “It was not at the level of a final.
“Now we’re a bit disappointed. It’s our fourth medal this year but we still don’t have a gold. However, we’re still in a good way.”
