Boys to fight for a semifinal place!

With temperatures off the scale off court – the action on the sand was even hotter as the men battled for a place in the last eight of the Poreč Major on a scorching Super Saturday.

And all of the remaining teams hold outstanding claims as they go in search of a place in Sunday’s semifinals.

In the first match of the Last 16 on Center Court, Austrian fans’ favorites Doppler/Horst edged a ding-dong three-set affair against Spain’s Herrera/Gavira. The roars of delight could probably be heard back in Vienna. Imagine the noise if they went all the way…

That wasn’t the only dramatic game, however – oh no. It might not have been on Center Court but on Court 3 there was an old fashioned American shootout. smart Major Hamburg winners Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena lost the first set to John Hyden and Tri Bourne and faced a match point in the second. An early exit looked on the cards but Dalhausser/Lucena are made of strong stuff and somehow recovered to take the set and then win the decider. Phew! That made us sweat just writing about it!

It was much easier for Olsztyn Grand Slam winners from Latvia, Samoilovs and Smedins, who sailed through against Poland’s Fijalek/Prudel. Poland couldn’t produce a quarterfinalist as Losiak/Kantor also lost in straight sets to America’s Gibb/Patterson.

Canada have enjoyed themselves at the tournament so far and Saxton/Schalk are through, too – doing the business against Mexicans Virgen/Ontiveros.

And last, but by no means least, two more Brazilians made it through by beating two teams from the Netherlands. Alison/Bruno beat Brouwer/Meeuwsen while Pedro Solberg/Evandro triumphed over Nummerdor/Varenhorst.
