Watch out Germany – Pavan/Bansley are better than ever
Canadian darlings Heather Bansley and Sarah Pavan love the Poreč Major and now they want to go one better than last year!
The pair were runners-up here in the gorgeous sunshine 12 months ago but Sarah says the team are in the mood to turn silver into gold in the final against qualifiers Laboureur/Sude at 16:30 CET – so watch out Germany!
“I think we’re definitely playing better than we were a year ago,” Sarah said to us afterwards. “There are different circumstances this year – we finished third in our Pool and had to battle our back. I think we also had to play three sets in every match!
“But this year it is different and it’s a great way to ramp up our performance for the Olympics.”
Their semifinal triumph was hit by an injury scare for opponents Kira Walkenhorst and Laura Ludwig that saw Walkenhorst receive a treatment on a knee injury sustained at a crucial point in the second set.
“A medical time out is always tough because it kills momentum,” explained Pavan. “We struggled for a few points afterwards but we regrouped and then took care of business.”
And their last piece of business at this year’s tournament will be the gold medal match on Center Court where they will be favorites.
“Maybe there’s more pressure on us but we’ll prepare as usual,” said Heather. “They’re a good team and it will be a battle but all we can do is prepare for our own game.”
