Last year’s silver medals in the final again!
Canadians Sarah Pavan and Heather Bansley cruised into their second successive Poreč Major final after a dramatic victory over European Champions Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst.
Last year’s silver medalists won in straight sets 21-17, 21-15 in a game that was marred by an unfortunate knee injury to Walkenhorst in the second set.
Pavan/Bansley kept their focus as the Germans attempted to recover from an impossible position but Canada’s finest got the job done to seal a mouthwatering final against another duo from Germany – qualifiers Chantal Laboureur and Julia Sude.
Ludwig/Walkenhorst still have a chance for a medal and remain upbeat despite missing the chance to win a fourth successive tournament gold.
And Walkenhorst refused to blame the injury as an excuse.
“From start to finish the Canadians were better,” she told us. “Injury wasn’t the reason why we lost. They pressurized us from the beginning – we did not play well.
“It happened when I went up for a block and it did feel a bit unstable but I will see the physio and get it checked out. I definitely want to fight for that medal.”
It will be an all-German bronze medal match as Ludwig/Walkenhorst take on Borger/Büthe at 15:15 and we’ll be live courtside for all the action as it unfolds. Don’t miss it!
