German glee as trio win semi spots

History was made in the women’s quarterfinals as for the first time three German teams made it through to the semifinals of a Major!

That’s right, we’re down to the final four in the women’s tournament and Germany are guaranteed to take home AT LEAST TWO medals from this year’s Poreč Major!

On Saturday the semifinals kick off at 11:00 CET on Center Court with a tasty all-German clash between Karla Borger and Britta Büthe and Chantal Laboureur and Julia Sude – the qualifiers who have swept all before them so far on the sand here in Croatia.

Borger/Büthe secured their spot in the semis with a 2-0 victory over Menegatti/Orsi Toth, the Italians who had caused a massive shock earlier in the day when stunning Larissa/Talita in the last 16. Laboureur/Sude overcame Brazilians – Maria Antonelli/Lili – in straight sets.

There seems no stopping the charge of Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst as they continue their relentless pursuit of a second successive Swatch Major Series title as they overcame up-and-coming Swiss talents Betschart/Hüberli.

Second seeds Ludwig/Walkenhorst will face the only non-Germany team left: Canada’s Sarah Pavan and Heather Bansley, who are looking to add to their silver medal they won here last season. The Canadians battled to a 2-1 victory over the other Brazilian duo in the quarterfinals, Fernanda/Josi.

“There’ll be no pressure, we’ll go out there and enjoy it,” said a victorious Britta Büthe, while Laura Ludwig added: “It’s great, we’ve heard that it’s never happened before and we hope that three German teams can be on the podium.”
