Major upset in women’s Pool Play
Can you believe it?! Two Olympic-bound teams have made shock exits at this year’s Poreč Major.
After a dramatic day yesterday that saw them lose two games each, last year’s bronze medalists Bawden/Clancy of Australia, and Fendrick/Sweat of the USA, both needed to win their final pool matches today – but they didn’t and crashed out of the fun in the sun here on the shores of the Adriatic.
As the 32 teams battled for a place in the knockout rounds that kick off later today, eight partnerships booked their spot in the last 16 of the Poreč Major without the need for a match in the round of 24.
Among those teams just one win from a quarterfinal place are three teams from Brazil and two from Germany.
Larissa/Talita and Fernanda Alves/Josi Alves topped their groups by winning all three matches, while Ludwig/Walkenhorst and Borger/Büthe also went through with unblemished records with some unbelievable beach volleyball.
Brazil will be represented in the knockout stages by at least five teams as Agatha/Barbara, Duda/Elise Maia and Maria Antontelli and Lili Maestrini also made it through.
Sadly, there was no fairytale for Croatian stars Sara Radanovic and Samanta Fabris as they lost to the Germans Holtwick/Semmler in their final match on Center Court. But they can take bucket loads of confidence from a successful tournament that saw them become the first Croatian women’s team to take a set in a Major Series tournament.
The draw for the knockout rounds has been made already – and was posted first on our Twitter account. The first round kicks off this evening. And we’ll have EVERYTHING covered: on social media and via our live streams! Enjoy people!
