World’s best take charge in Poreč Pool Play
The world’s leading men took to the stage for the first time at the Poreč Major this morning and all came through their opening matches with flying colors.
smart Major Hamburg champions Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena survived an early scare against Austrian qualifiers Winter/Petutschnig but triumphed 2-1 in one of the opening matches of a scorching hot day beside the sea in Istria.
They were not the only Americans to taste victory on day one of the men’s Pool Play as Casey Patterson and Jake Gibb overcame countrymen Tri Bourne and John Hyden.
One thing we’ve noticed already here in Poreč is that there are tons of Austrian fans soaking up the sun and loving the action on the sand. And those supporters had a mixed morning as they saw their two Olympic hopes win and lose. Clemens Doppler and Alex Horst lost a thrilling match on Center Court to Brazilians Guto/Saymon 2-1, but Huber/Seidl claimed a 2-0 win over Spain’s Marco/Garciá.
Brazilian top seeds Alison/Bruno got off to a winning start beating Croatian hopes Karaula/Jercic and last year’s gold medal winners Alex Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen got off to the perfect start in the defense of their title with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Pokeršnik/Zemljak of Slovenia.
All the men will play two matches today – and don’t worry, we’ve not forgotten about the girls: they complete their Pool Play later before the first round of knockout matches rounds off what promises to be a day full of thrills and spills. No change there then!
