Women battle through qualification
Three German women’s teams marched through into Main Draw on a hectic day of qualification at the Poreč Major.
Number one seeds Laboureur/Sude made light work of Czech duo Rehackova/Dostalova in the first women’s match to be staged on the Center Court, winning easily in straight sets.
There were also victories for fourth seeds Bieneck/Groβner and seventh seeds Mersmann/Schneider to give the Germans a super six teams in the Main Draw, which include smart Major Hamburg winners Ludwig/Walkenhorst and their fellow Olympic teammates Karla Borger and Britta Büthe.
It was a brilliant day for the Brazilian women too, as they added to their numbers in the Main Draw with two more names in the hat as Fernanda/Josi and Maria Antonelli/Lili both recorded wins. The latter of those victories was achieved in dramatic circumstances as Maria Antontelli/Lili staged a memorable comeback to win 2-1 against the USA’s Larsen/Flint.
That game was the last to finish on an epic first day of the Poreč Major – 24 women’s teams began the day fighting for a place in the Main Draw and only eight made it through. That’s the nature of the qualification but we’re sure we’ll see plenty of the familiar faces we had the pleasure of watching today back at our Gstaad Major next week!
