Olympic-bound duo aiming for semifinals by the sea
Watch out Poreč…German beach volleyball stars Karla Borger and Britta Büthe are plotting revenge at this week’s Poreč Major!
The popular pair were knocked out in the quarterfinals 12 months ago, losing to eventual bronze medalists Taliqua Clancy and Louise Bawden of Australia.
After their dramatic game of schnick schnack schnuck to decide their Olympic captaincy on Sunday, the girls told us how hungry they are to improve on their game this time around.
“We were mad about how we lost in the quarterfinal, we didn’t play well,” Britta, their newly-crowned captain, said. “I remember sitting here and promising that next year we need to do better.
“We just want to play our best beach volleyball and try it make through the week. We want to make it through to the semifinals and if we have that chance we will try and grab it.”
She might have lost the tiebreaker in schnick schnack schnuck, but Karla shared her partner’s optimism for this year’s Poreč Major.
She said: “We want to improve and show that we can make it really far.
“Poreč is a lovely town and we appreciate being here – we want to be here as long as possible.”
And having witnessed some dull football matches at the European Championships, Karla had a message for the beach fans: “We’re going to have so much fun – the football has been so boring but beach volleyball is so much fun!
“So come out here and experience it with us, it’s an awesome event, it’s so much fun, so show up and join us!”
We couldn’t have put it any better ourselves, Karla. Viel Glück this week girls!
