Schnick schnack schnuck decides Rio captaincy! Author: Swatch Major Series

On Saturday night we revealed on Twitter that Poreč Major contenders Karla Borger and Britta Büthe would decide who will captain their team at this summer’s Olympics with a game of schnick schnack schnuck on our very own Center Court.

It was a nail-biting, tense affair – the crowd was…erm, well there was no crowd…BUT there was a winner in a historical match that went all the way to a tiebreak!

And the winner? Britta! The 28-year-old overcame her teammate Karla 3-2 on Center Court in Poreč and will now take on extra responsibility in Rio when they step out onto the Copacabana.

The German duo, who reached the quarterfinals at last year’s Poreč Major, have played schnick schnack schnuck before every match to determine who will captain the team since they teamed up together in 2008.

A delighted newly-crowned Büthe told us: “It’s really exciting and cool, but it feels a bit weird knowing already that I will be the captain – but the Olympics are special so that it feels good.

“The game was so close and I think you can see that we really know each other well. Maybe I was a bit lucky in the tiebreak but I have to thank a friend of mine who coached me and gave me some advice!”

A disappointed Karla could still manage a smile despite missing out on the captaincy.

“I am proud that Britta is the captain,” she said. “Maybe I’ll buy her a crown tonight and she can wear it all week and we can celebrate!

“We played schnick schnack schnuck at a regional tournament. We saw some guys doing it, we didn’t know at that point who would be captain so we came up with the idea and now it’s tradition.

“It’s funny because it takes a few minutes sometimes to decide but all the players, referees and some of the fans know that we’re doing it so we think it’s a pretty cool thing. It makes the game more fun, it’s a tradition we love to do and one we’ll continue.”
