Duo delight at winning gold on national day
The wait for an elusive gold medal for Sarah Pavan at the Poreč Major is over!
The 30-year-old won silver the last two years with Heather Bansley but, with new partner Melissa Humana-Paredes, finally clinched gold, winning an epic final in three sets in front of a packed crowd on the Red Bull Beach Arena.
What’s more the pair achieved their first gold together as a team on Canada Day.
“It was very emotional, I started crying at the end,” said Pavan afterwards. “Mel and I have just come together as a team but we’ve both wanted gold for so long that doing it as a team is an amazing feeling.
“To do it on Canada Day makes it perfect.”
The victory meant Humana-Paredes claimed her first international gold and the 22-year-old said: “It’s indescribable. When you dream of something and you finally achieve it, it is the best feeling ever and you want to do it again.”
Joining the finalists on the podium were Tanja Hüberli and Nina Betschart, who claimed the bronze medal. The Swiss pair beat Brazil’s Barbara Seixas and Fernanda Alves in straight sets 21-14, 21-19.
