Rio Olympic rivals meet again in Croatia
Olympic gold and silver medalists of 2016 will go head-to-head for a place in the men’s final of the Poreč Major on Sunday.
Champions Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt – who won the title here last year – meet silver medalists Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo at the Red Bull Beach Arena at high noon on Sunday.
Of course, the two teams are no strangers to each other. Lupo/Nicolai beat the Brazilians in straight sets in the pool play stage earlier in the competition this week.
Alison/Bruno were in inspiring form as they eased past American Patterson/Brunner in straight sets, while Lupo/Nicolai also beat opposition from the USA, triumphing over Gibb/Taylor Crabb in three.
The dream of a second successive Poreč Major final for Austrians Clemens Doppler and Alex Horst is over though. The experienced pair, who won silver 12 months ago, lost in straight sets to Guto/Pedro Solberg – the Brazilians who had to come through country quota and qualification.
Guto – who won the A1 Major Klagenfurt last year – and Pedro Solberg – the Gstaad Major in 2016 champion – will meet Russians Stoyanovskiy/Yarzutkin.
