Lupo/Nicolai into Sunday’s semis!
Olympic silver medalists and European Champions Daniele Lupo and Paolo Nicolai are hunting down their first Swatch Major Series medal after securing a spot in the Poreč Major semifinals.
The Italians enjoyed a stellar 2016 but have surprisingly yet to clinch a podium spot on any of the Swatch Major Series tournaments since its inception in 2015.
However, that could all change in Poreč this weekend following the duo’s quarterfinal win over American Jake Gibb and Taylor Crabb.
The Italians were in command in the first set but the Gibb and Taylor upped their game in the second to level the set score and take it to a decider.
But Gibb and Taylor had no answer in the decider as Paolo and Daniele turned on the style to reach their first ever Swatch Major Series semifinal.
The pair will now take on either Olympic champions Alison/Bruno or Americans Brunner/Patterson in Sunday’s semi.
In the earlier quarterfinal, Russians Stoyanovskiy/Yarzutkin earned their place in the last four with a 2-1 win over Poland’s Szalankiewicz/Rudol.
