Anouk and Joana beat Brazil…again!
Two weeks after their victory over them at three-star event at The Hague, new Swiss team for 2017, Anouk Vergé-Dépré and Joana Heidrich beat Brazilians Agatha/Duda again to progress at the Poreč Major.
The stars of the Swatch beach volleyball lightshow raced into the last 16 of the Poreč Major with a straight sets win over the Fort Lauderdale silver medalists 23-21, 21-18.
Their reward is a last 16 meeting against Canadians Heather Bansley and Brandie Wilkerson on Friday.
Meanwhile, Olympic champion Laura Ludwig and stand-in partner Maggie Kozuch overcame Austrians Schwaiger/Schützenhöfer. The Germans took the first set but, cheered on by the army of traveling Austrian fans on a packed Center Court, Steffie and Katharina levelled the score to take it to a decider. However, they couldn’t keep up with Laura and Maggie in the decider and the Germans triumphed 15-9 to set-up a last 16 tie against Czech pair Kolocova/Kvapilova.
Last year’s winners Laboureur/Sude also got their names in the hat for the last 16 by beating Stubbe/Sinnema of Holland in straight sets. The defence of their title will come under real pressure when they take on Brazilians Barbara/Fernanda on Friday.
