Early setback for Germans at Poreč Major
Last season’s Poreč Major gold medalists Chantal Laboureur and Julia Sude suffered an early setback in their quest to retain their title following a defeat on the opening day of the pool play.
All looked rosy for the Germans, who won bronze at the Fort Lauderdale Major in February, after they won the first set against Kolocova/Kvapilova with ease, limiting the their opponents to just 11 points.
However, the Czech girls stormed back to take an epic set, surviving no less than five match points. On each occasion, however, Laboureur/Sude could not finish the job and at 27-26, Kvapilova delivered the winning point to level the set score at 1-1.
In the third set, the Germans, fresh from winning a European Tour event in Austria last week, looked set to take it, leading 8-5 at one stage. But once again the Czechs bounced back, clawing it back the deficit and go on and take the decider 15-13. It completed a miraculous turnaround and sealed an important early win in the tournament.
Elsewhere in the first pool play matches in the women’s division, there were victories for Switzerland’s Heidrich/Verge-Depre and Fort Lauderdale silver medalists Agatha/Duda.
It’s a busy day of action here in Croatia and remember you can watch all the matches live on BeachStream.
