Stop, make note, and watch these games!
The pool play gets under way on Wednesday and what a wonderful day it promises to be with a schedule jam-packed with Olympic and European stars on the sand.
With so many matches – 48 in total – it’s not easy which ones to pinpoint and take in. So fear not, Major fans – here’s our quick guide to the five best matches to catch on day two of the Poreč Major. Make sure you don’t miss them!
Who? Laboureur/Sude v Kolocova/Kvapilova
When? 9am CET
Where? Court 4
Why? Last year’s gold medal winners had to win it the hard way 12 months ago, battling through qualification before going onto claim glory. There’s no such need for that this year, though as Julia and Chantal are in red hot form. They won the Baden Masters on the European Tour last week and are keen to add to the bronze medal they won at the Fort Lauderdale Major back in February.
Who? Heidrich/Vergé-Dépré v Day/Hochevar
When? 9.50am CET
Where? Court 5
Why? The new Swiss team for 2017 are beginning to find their form, as shown with the silver medal they won in The Hague last week. Joana and Anouk take on another team with reason to cheer. Americans Day/Hochevar beat Kerri Walsh Jennings and Nicole Branagh in the country quota so they have every reason to be confident going into the pool play.
Who? Larissa/Talita v Becic/Radanovic
When? 11.30am CET
Where? Court 3
Why? Fort Lauderdale Major winners in February Larissa/Talita are aiming to regain the Poreč Major title that they claimed two years ago. The experienced Brazilians will be keen to avoid an upset when they take on rank outsiders from host country Croatia, Becic/Radanovic. Can the home fans cheer their team on to what would be a shock victory?
Who? Doppler/Horst v Stoyanovskiy/Yarzutkin
When? 5pm CET
Where? Red Bull Beach Arena
Why? Silver medalists 12 months ago, Doppler/Horst are out to go one better this time. The Austrians will be backed by a passionate following of fans who have headed south to give their vocal support. However, they face stiff opposition from the Russian duo who have already won two bronze medals on the World Tour this year.
Who? Alvaro Filho/Saymon v Perisic/Dell’Orco
When? 9pm CET
Where? Red Bull Beach Arena
Why? It’s the match we’ve all been waiting for! International soccer star Ivan Perišić makes his beach volleyball debut alongside Niksa Dell’Orco under the Red Bull Beach Area floodlights against none other than the Fort Lauderdale Major champions from Brazilian. All eyes will be on Perišić – can he cope with first-class beach volley or will he teach the Brazilians a thing or two?
