Day/Hochevar stun Walsh/Branagh with wonderful wina
Emily Day and Brittany Hochevar produced a stunning performance to advance to qualification stage of the Poreč Major following a straight sets victory over fellow Americans Kerri Walsh Jennings and Nicole Branagh.
In the first major story before the tournament even begins on Tuesday, the two teams locked horns in a country quota match to decide which tandem would advance to the qualification stage.
Kerri and Nicole were playing their first match together since 2012 but they had no answer against an in-form Emily and Brittany who will now aim to join three American teams in the women’s main draw, which kicks off on Wednesday.
Day/Hochevar have registered four top-nine finishes on the World Tour so far this season, including one at the Fort Lauderdale Major back in February.
Following their victory Emily said: “It went well, we won in two. It’s very nerve-wracking, it’s country quota where it’s do or die – but it went well out there.”
“On to the qualifiers, step one’s done!” added Brittany.
Congratulations guys, see you on Tuesday!
The draw for the men’s and women’s qualification tournament will follow in due course. Keep your eyes peeled on our website for further details.
