Historic first Swatch Beach Volleyball Major Series tournament on the Istrian Coast
No, it’s not a new beach volleyball uniform. German raceplane pilot Matthias Dolderer, fresh from thrilling the crowds at the Red Bull Air Race World Championship Series stop in Rovinj, Croatia, stopped by Porec to hand off the action sport ball to the Swatch Major Series, hosting its historic first tournament this weekend.
Dolderer hit some volleys with his countryman, 2012 Olympic beach volleyball champion and Swatch Major Series expert Julius Brink, and got to meet two local Croatian stars of the sport, Antea Tadić and Maja Roško.
Brink, who joked that Dolderer looked a little bit like an “alien” attacking the net in his flight suit and helmet, commented, “Beach volleyball is a pretty technical and difficult sport, and I have to admit that I was impressed by the way he moved. When Matthias took me up for a G flight in his raceplane a few days ago, he gave me a good introduction to his sport, and I tried to do the same with him.”
“Beach volleyball is hard, but I like it!” said Dolderer, who will soon be taking his raceplane to the next stop of the world’s fastest motorsport series in Budapest, Hungary on July 4–5. “Rovinj has been such a fantastic location for the Red Bull Air Race over the past two years, and I’m really happy to see that Istria is hosting another global action series. It’s going to be great.”
